Chairman of RA Investigative Committee Receive Director of Directorate General of Human Rights of Council of Europe (photos)

The Chairman of the RA Investigative Committee Hayk Grigoryan received the Director of Directorate General of Human Rights of Council of Europe Christophe Poirel.

Greeting the guests the Chairman of the Investigative Committee referred to intensive and efficient cooperation with EC Office in Yerevan.

Hayk Grigoryan thanked the guests for joint programs implemented previously and expressed his willingness to deepen the cooperation and go on with the programs with new strength.

During the meeting the Chairman of the Investigative Committee presented a number of programs worked out by him to enhance the efficiency of preliminary investigation the implementation of which is currently in process.

Director of Directorate General of Human Rights of Council of Europe Christophe Poirel welcomed the programs presented by the IC Chairman and expressed unconditional willingness in support in the process of their implementation.

During the meeting the head of EC delegation got interested in problems of using detention as a pretrial measure.

Hayk Grigoryan presented statistics on using detention as a pretrial measure in the last two years and according to it the number of those detained has decreased year by year.

Hayk Grigoryan mentioned the position of political leaders pursuant to which the aim of law enforcement bodies is not filling the prisons with people. «The announcement of the RA Prime Minister, pursuant to which our aim is not filling the prisons with people, is the best evidence that not only the law enforcement bodies but also RA leaders attach importance to person's dignity and detention is chosen as a pretrial measure only if there are sufficient grounds».  

At the end of the meeting Director of Directorate General of Human Rights of Council of Europe Christophe Poirel once more expressed his willingness to support the programs to be implemented by the Investigative Committee and mentioned that he highly appraised the policy adopted by the leadership of the Investigative Committee, the steps taken to organize the investigation of criminal cases in an efficient way.
